About – THE WAITING ROOM – What r u waiting for?
From www.whatruwaitingfor.com:
THE WAITING ROOM follows the life and times of patients and staff at Highland Hospital, a county hospital in Oakland, CA.
The project includes:
- THIS BLOG which features waiting room stories, conversations, and behind-the-scenes information about the project.
- A feature-length DOCUMENTARY FILM called The Waiting Room (now in production) that will follow several characters who pass through the waiting room.
- An INTERACTIVE WEB SITE (later this year) that will feature content gathered from an INTERACTIVE STORY BOOTH that will be placed in the waiting room and will allow patients and hospital staff to view, record, and share stories.
This is an interesting experiment in social media going on with Highland Medical Center in Oakland, Calif. I'm not really sure what the message and purpose of the production are yet, but I'm also not sure that the producers know either. Even so, it's interesting to see people in an E.D. waiting room walking up to a camera and recording their experiences for the world to see.

hey dagan
thanks for checking out our project. The Waiting Room was born from a documentary film about the uninsured that evolved into a film with an organically related social media project. I guess what that means in the most basic sense is that we are doing two things at once: 1. producing a documentary film that will follow several characters at the hospital over the course of several months. 2. producing a video blog through interviews of staff and patients in the ER waiting room. Some of the shorter blog bits will be featured in the final film. Then after the film is completed, aired and distributed the video blog project will continue via an automated story booth that we will install in the waiting room (and then other waiting rooms around the country). The purpose is simply to tell the story of our public hospitals and the communities they serve. We may or may not build a fully functional interactive site…we first want to see how far we can take existing platforms and use their built-in functionality.
The project is being co-produced by ITVS so the film will most likely be seen nationally on PBS. What is a bit murkier is what exactly we’re doing with the social media project, who we want to see the videos and how they can be used by the general public, journalists, hospitals and non-profits. We’ll have a lot of fun over the next year finding out…plus telling the live, unfolding story of an amazing American institution. So feel free to keep the comments and suggestions coming!
